What does "slip away" mean? Does it have the same meaning as disappearing?

Yes! It's similar to "disappear." This might be strange, but I like to think of it as a fish that you're holding in your hands, and it's still alive, so eventually, it wriggles out and escapes into the water- it "slips away." Likewise, things can "slip away" from you if you don't take action or if there's an indifference. It can also mean to leave without saying goodbye- or quietly. Ex: Jim slipped away from the group before we went to dinner. => to leave quietly Ex: The opportunity slipped away before I decided what to do. => disappeared
