What is the difference between "parley" and "negotiate"?

To "parley" means to discuss something, usually with enemies, to agree to stop fighting for some time or for a truce. To negotiate means to be on the same terms or to reach an agreement, not necessarily with enemies. So there's a more specific context with "parley" than there is with "negotiate." Ex: The two rival schools decided to parley so they could have their school dance together. Ex: I negotiated with the store owner for a better price on the chair. Ex: We need to negotiate a new contract if I'm going to continue working with you.
