What's "once and for all" mean? And is it commonly used expression?

It's not a very commonly used expression, but it isn't used too rarely either. The "for all" has an implied word that is not part of the expression, and that word is "time". When one says "for all time", that means that whatever is being described applies or will apply forever. "Once" simply means that what is being described will happen one time and have the described effect "for all (time)". "Close the tomb and once and for all" means that Lara will close the tomb one time (once) and it will remain closed forever (for all). Ex: I wish I could stop coming to work once and for all. Ex: Laser eye surgery will fix my eyesight once and for all.
