"A day in the life" is more a kind of "theme" or general idea rather than an idiom. "A day in the life" means the events that generally occur in the space of one's day. Ex: Cleaning up sick is a day in the life of being a nurse. Ex: A day in the life of a celebrity must be amazing but a lot of work.
