I don't know when "learn" can be used alone, and when it needs a preposition like this.

"Learn" refers that someone has to go through the process to be able to do something. "Learn about" refers to becoming knowledgeable about something by reading books, listening to lectures, and so on. Ex: Let's learn cooking. (Let's learn how to cook). Ex: Let's learn about cooking. (Let's learn how cooking started, some theories of cooking, etc.) Ex: I need to learn English. (I need to learn how to use English grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation) Ex: I need to learn about English. (I need to learn how English started).
