This is a good question! "I'm afraid" doesn't express fear. It's actually a polite phrase used to express polite or formal apology or regret, similar to "I'm sorry". Ex: I'm afraid we're all sold out today. Ex: I'm afraid I won't be available tomorrow. Can we reschedule for another day?
