To "be better off" means that it would benefit someone to do or not do something, or with or without someone or something. It's usually said as a way of advising someone of something. Ex: You'll be better off at home than going away for the weekend since it's raining. Ex: She's better off without him. Ex: You'll be better off taking a taxi instead of walking. It's quite far!
