I've often seen people calling others' names with the suffix "-y" in the end. Why would they do that?

When addressing people, "-y" or "-ie" is sometimes added to the end to sound cute, or to express closeness, affection, or endearment. For example, it's very common for children to call their parents "daddy" or "mommy." You might also add it to the end of names, especially children's names. It's not so common to do this as an adult or to adults, as it might be understood to be condescending or childish. Ex: Georgie, it's time to go to bed! Ex: Mommy, can you bring me to the library?
