Would it sound awkward if I say "on the air" instead of "in the air" in this context?

Yes! It would sound awkward. The phrase, "on the air", is more readily associated with being on the radio or television when you say you are "live". "Air" also doesn't have a surface, so, it may sound strange to say "on" rather than "in" in this context. Since we're all living in an atmosphere with air all around us, it makes sense that we are essentially "inside" the air. Ex: We are going to have live, on-air interviews in five minutes. Ex: The talk show host was nice on-air, but he was rude when the cameras were off. Ex: The bird is flying in the air! Ex: I'm waving a stick in the air.
