By "take it down a thousand", Miss Hannigan is telling the children to be less enthusiastic and emotive when saying, "We love you Miss Hannigan!" because if it's too exaggerated no one will believe them. This can be used in other scenarios and is common to say. Like if someone is very excited or if a behaviour or emotion is too intense. Ex: Can you take it down a few thousand? Your negativity is ruining the fun for everyone. Ex: Gosh! Take it down a few thousand. No need to be so angry. Ex: Helen, we're just going to a dog park. Please, take your excitement down a few thousand. You're giving me a headache. Ex: I know I annoy my roommates with how much I clean, so I'm trying to take it down a few thousand.
