To "sniff out" means to detect something by following and finding clues or a trail. The same way, perhaps, a police dog detects something by "sniffing." Or it can mean to seek, locate, or discover something. Ex: We're sniffing out a new fishing spot this weekend. Ex: We sniffed out the culprit. They're in their new hideout. Ex: Have you sniffed out any good taco places here? => discovered or found Ex: Make sure to hide the evidence of eating all the chocolate. Otherwise, mom will sniff you out.
