I'd say having a "journal" is much more popular these days than having a "diary." It's perceived as an admirable habit! It's similar to people saying they want to exercise in the new year; people also say they want to journal every day. So yes, it is common! Not everyone does it, but a lot of people do - or at least they want, or try, to journal every day. Ex: My new year's resolution is to journal every day. Ex: Sometimes journaling really helps with my mental health! Ex: I like to get my thoughts onto a page, so I journal every day.
