Can I say "self defense" instead of "personal protection"? Or would it make the sentence sound awkward?

I don't think it would sound awkward, but the context wouldn't fit. "Self defence" implies the action of "defending" or fighting back, whereas "personal protection" means to keep something or someone safe! Ex: Don't worry! If anyone tries to attack, I know self defence. Ex: Harry carries around his blanket as a personal protection device. He feels safe with it. Ex: The trampoline underneath the bar acts as protection if you fall.
