When can I use "Whereas"?

"Whereas" is a conjunction most commonly used to compare or contrast two different things or ideas. It is usually used in the second half of a sentence. It can sometimes be replaced with "while" or "on the other hand." Ex. My husband only has coffee for breakfast, whereas I like to eat a full meal. Ex. Living costs in my city have gone up, whereas wages have stayed the same or declined.
