Why would the interviewers always ask this question at the end? What's the purpose?

There are a couple of reasons! The first, and arguably the most important, is that if you have questions, then it means you've done some research and thinking about the company. You haven't gone into the interview without knowing anything about the company itself. The second is that it allows you to see if the company is a good fit for you. Hiring an employee is about the employee's ability, but it's also the employee's decision to work at the company, so the two have to align. It's also possible that something wasn't explained well, or you're curious about something, and that's your chance to ask about it.
