What's the difference between "lose to" and "lose"?

"Lose to" and "lost to" is used when referring to who defeated you in a game, competition, etc. "Lose" simply describes not being the winner of a game, competition, etc. Ex: Our soccer team lost to our rival school. Ex: If I don't score another point, I will lose the game.
