A "holding pattern" is a state, form, or period without any change or progress. It stays the same. It's also a term referring to when an aircraft stays on the same flight path before they are allowed to land. Ex: The court case has been in a holding pattern for a while now. Ex: The pilot was instructed to go into the normal holding pattern.
