I understand this "would" is used as subjunctive mood and "if I was" is omitted before "coming". However, shouldn't the auxiliary verb be followed by the infinitive form of the verb? Why is "would" followed by "if" in this case?

I apologize. I was incorrect on which words were being omitted. It really should be "...just like I would when coming home for a holiday." The word "when" is missing. He is just shortening the sentence. This happens quite often in spoken English.
