A "series of" something means a number of things or events of similar nature that happen one after the other. Here it's similar to an expected order of events that happen one after the other. Ex: There's a series of workshops that I'm attending this quarter. Ex: The store doors opened into a series of smaller booths. Ex: I ran the police officer through the series of events that happened right before the robbery.
