Sometimes they are used interchangeably! But the main difference is that a "story" is a description of imagined events and people. A "narrative" is an account of a series of events and happenings. It can also be a bigger idea, concept, or opinion presented in a story. A "tale" is an imagined narrative, usually one that is quite unrealistic. A "tale" can also imply an event or telling that isn't proven to be true. Ex: I enjoy reading stories of bravery and redemption. Ex: He's writing a narrative of his life. I look forward to reading it. Ex: I didn't like the narrative of her family not supporting her decision. Ex: There's a tale about a man on 33rd street who lives with ghosts. But I don't believe it.
