Would it change the context of a sentence if I either omit "about" or exchange it to "what are you thinking of"?

When you want to ask someone about what's on their mind, "what are you thinking about" is the most natural expression to use. "What are you thinking" is unfinished, whereas "what are you thinking of" sounds awkward. Ex: What are you thinking about? You look so serious. Ex: Can you tell me what you're thinking about?
