"Now and then" is similar in meaning to "occasionally" or "sometimes" (a little less frequently than "sometimes") and can be used in the same kinds of situations! Like the speaker here, you can use it to say that one does something occasionally (but not very frequently). Ex: Occasionally I like to go to concerts or music festivals for some fun. Ex: I'm not a big shopper. I only go occasionally, like during big annual sales.
