"Garbage" and "truck" actually don't have the same meaning! When combined, "garbage truck" becomes a term that means a truck that comes to pick up garbage. You could say "trash truck," but most native speakers don't say that. If you use "trash truck," you may be corrected or looked at with confusion. Ex: The garbage truck stops at our place every Monday. Ex: He works in sanitation and drives the garbage truck around town.
