What's "better off" mean and when's it used?

To be "better off" means to be in a position or state better which is than before. You can use this especially in situations in which you are comparing the results before and after something. Ex: After breaking up with my boyfriend, I am much better off emotionally and mentally. Ex: My new promotion left me better off financially.
