"Work your way out" means to move from the center or starting point of something and into the surrounding areas. This is used to express movement! Ex: Start handing out flyers here, and then work your way out to the rest of the district. Ex: Paint a few objects in the middle of the canvas, and then, from there, you can add more to the background.
