What makes independent films so different from ordinary films?

There are quite a few differences between independent films (also called "indie films") and studio films. Independent films are not backed by a large production company, so they usually have smaller budgets and less resources. Their focus is more on the content of the story and the director's personal artistic vision. Independent films are also marketed and released in different ways (in smaller studios, or on a smaller scale than studio films). This does not mean that they are less interesting or lower-quality than studio films, however. Many indie films have also become popular mainstream films or won awards. Some recent notable ones include "Call Me By Your Name," "Black Swan," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Moonlight," and "Juno."
