I've heard that the word "nerd" is considered rude. But, why would she call herself a "nerd"?

It depends on the context! Like with all adjectives with negative connotations, it would be rude for a person to call another person "nerd." However, if someone calls him or herself a nerd, it's likely that they don't find the word insulting at all, and they likely even embrace it. That's the case in this video here. Ex: I'm a proud nerd. Ex: I would describe myself as nerdy, bookish, and smart.
