Here, "step on" means to physically step or place one's foot on to something else- to press one's foot onto something. "Step on" can also mean to treat someone badly. And then, as a phrase, "Step on it" means to go faster, usually in a vehicle. Ex: I stepped on your glasses. I'm so sorry! Ex: You can't step on whoever you want to get what you want. => you can't be unkind to people Ex: I'm late for my flight, James. Step on it!
