Would it change the connotation of the sentence if I say "left to" instead of "left for"?

Yes, you're right. It would change the connotation of the sentence. "Left to" is usually followed by a verb and a reason why. "Left for" is used when you start to leave one place to go to another place. Ex: Holly is leaving for the airport in an hour. Ex: I left to learn about different cultures.
