A gekko is a type of scaled reptile. It is an animal related to snakes, lizards, and worm lizards. Gekko in particular is one specific genus of geckos that come from Southeast Asia. An interesting fact is that there are over 85 gekko species and they come in a variety of colors and patterns!

A good synonym here would also be "each person," but you're right, "individual" does sound a little more formal!
