student asking question

I've been always curious about this. What's the difference between "empathy" and "sympathy?"

Good question! Sympathy and empathy are similar, but differ in their intensity. To have sympathy is to feel sorry for someone (to feel emotions like compassion, sorrow, sadness, or pity), while empathy is to put yourself in another person's shoes (perspective) to understand their pain, difficulties, or experiences. You can understand empathy to have a much stronger emotional component than sympathy. For example, a friend's grandparent has passed away. To feel sympathy means to feel bad for their loss, while to feel empathy means to share and understand their pain. Ex: My sympathies for your loss. Ex: I feel a lot of empathy for Ukrainians because I am a refugee myself.
