"Elaborate" and "complicated" are synonyms of each other. However, they differ ever so slightly. "elaborate" means detailed in design and system. "Complicated" can also mean detailed in design, but it could also mean that there are many parts to it that might not be easily understood. "Sophisticated" is slightly different! "Sophisticated" means to be developed in high quality and complexly, but in a way that is very advanced. Ex: This is a very sophisticated AI system. Ex: The carpet design was elaborate. Ex: This game seems too complicated to play.
