What's the main difference between a "street" and a "block?"

In most cities in North America, a "block" is a square or rectangular area surrounded by four streets, usually containing several buildings. Streets are planned and constructed on a grid, forming "city blocks" which are square or rectangular. You can understand a block as the distance between two intersections, so it is a rather small unit. Ex: I live only one block away from my best friend. Ex: Go two blocks north and you'll reach your destination. Meanwhile, a "street" is any public road in a city or town, usually with buildings along the sides. Thus, it is a smaller unit than a block! Ex: I live on the same street as my office. Ex: There are many pot holes along this street.
