Kiwi asks…

What's the difference between "guarantee" and "warranty"?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

In this context, these words are fairly similar. A "guarantee" is a promise that something will be done or will happen. These guarantees usually come with a written promise from the company. Ex: The ad said that we could try out this product for 30 days with a money-back guarantee! Ex: He won't buy a product without a guarantee to get his money back. A "warranty" is a written promise by a company that they will repair or replace a broken product within a certain time frame. Ex: My computer has a one-year warranty. Ex: She decided to skip the extended warranty for her new cell phone.
