Kiwi asks…

What's the main difference between "occasionally" and "sometimes?"

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

Good question! They seem similar in meaning, but there is a difference. "Sometimes" means not always, on certain occasions. Ex: I sometimes work out at the gym. Ex: I like to sometimes grab a coffee before work. "Occasionally" means now and then, once in a while, irregularly. It indicates a lower frequency than "sometimes." Ex: Occasionally, I'll have a smoke when I feel stressed out. Ex: I occasionally visit my family during the holidays.
