Kiwi asks…

What's "sustained" mean here?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

Here, "sustained" is similar to "supported." It isn't common to use "sustained" in this manner, as it sounds a bit formal and unnatural. But, he's saying that he has been supported emotionally, physically, and mentally by his friends, which has enabled him to "keep going" and do what he wants to do. Ex: The energy drink I had earlier sustained me through the marathon. => It kept the person going and gave them energy. Ex: My friends and family have sustained me through my schooling career. = My friends and family have supported me through my schooling career.
