Kiwi asks…

In English, which word is more common? A "coffee shop?" Or a "cafe?"

Answer from a Native speaker

Rebecca

Generally, they're interchangeable! I've heard them used the same way. But, some say that a "coffee shop" focuses on the coffee itself, whereas a "cafe" might have other things like meals, too. Ex: I went to the cafe for breakfast and some coffee. Ex: I love the smell of coffee beans inside coffee shops.
