Kiwi asks…

How's it named cotton candy in the beginning?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

When it was first invented, the original name was "fairy floss" (1897), but it was later changed to "cotton candy" (1921) which has become much more popular all over the world. Only Australia still refers to it as "fairy floss". The name was changed to "cotton candy" because it looks similar to cotton (the plant), but it is a candy, thus "cotton candy". Ex: Making more cotton candy requires buying a new, bigger machine. Ex: Sue is eating chips, cotton candy, and a chocolate bar.
