The phrase "was gonna be" is used when discussing alternate scenarios. Something could have happened if things were different. You also may know this, but "gonna" is the informal way to say "going to." Ex: I was gonna be a star if I didn't live here. Ex: She was gonna be in the Olympics if she didn't injure her knee. Ex: It was gonna be warm today, but instead, it rained.
