Doesn't the pentagon refer to a geometrical figure? Why would they call their ministry of defense a "pentagon?"

Good question! Actually, it's called the Pentagon because of its shape. The land the Pentagon was first planned to go on was bordered on five sides by roads (in the shape of a pentagon), so the architects designed a five-sided building also in the shape of a pentagon. That is the origin of the name.
