What's "spellbinding" mean? Does it have to do something with "spell?"

"Spellbinding" means to hold one's attention as if it were a magic "spell!" Some synonyms include "captivating" and "mesmerizing." Ex: The performance was spellbinding! = The performance was captivating! Ex: This book has a spellbinding storyline. I finished it in one day!
