student asking question

I see the expression "flat-top" is not general. If so, is the expression "flat-top" in here used to describe the relationship with her father who served in Marine corps? Like hairstyle, or aircraft carrier.. and so on?

You are right! Flat-top isn't really a general term that is used. In America, if you are in the armed forces, such as marines, army, etc. the men usually have to keep their hair short. A flat-top is when the top of a man's hair is completely flat and shaved on the sides. I believe a flat-top is more common in the marines than it is in the other armed forces, but that doesn't mean that this type of haircut is exclusive to just the marines.
