What are the differences between “in the street” and “on the street”?
There's not really a huge difference between the two phrases, it really depends on the context or message that you are trying to send. In this fragment, it would be completely natural to use either 'in' or 'on'. In some contexts, 'in the street' can be understood as 'in the middle of the street', where cars are going by, like in Marvin Gaye's song "Dancing in the street".
