Why "the" is not put between "on top"? How different "on top" and "on the top"?
Native speaker’s answer
Rebecca
"The" is not put between "on" and "top" here because that is how many native English speakers say this phrase, because it usually flows better than saying "on the top". There is no difference in meaning between "on top" and "on the top". While native English speakers usually say "on top", "on the top" could be used for emphasis. Ex: The keys are on top of the fridge. ("On top" here is neutral) Ex: I can't believe I went on the top of the tower! ("On the top" here is used for emphasis)
