What kind of the expression is "on the way out"? Is this a common phrase?

"The door" is just an object of the verb "close". So it is nothing to do with the expression "on the way out." "On the way out" means to do something while leaving a place. It is a very common expression. Ex: Can you get the mail on the way out? Ex: I'll turn off the light my way out.
