"Thanks, man" is a very informal phrase that can be used sarcastically, or to seriously thank someone. Here, "thanks, man" is used sarcastically to mean "thank you for saying that". Since he is being sarcastic, he actually means "I wish you hadn't said that". As previously mentioned, "thanks, man" can be used when casually thanking somebody. "Thanks, man" should not be used in formal situations. Ex: A: Your hair looks terrible. B: Thanks, man. ("Thanks, man" used sarcastically) Ex: A: I bought a gift for you! B: Thanks, man! ("Thanks, man" used to thank someone)
