The indefinite article "a" or "an" is used to refer to non-specific, general nouns, while the definite article "the" refers to specific nouns. So in the case of the video here, "an indifferent universe" refers to a hypothetical universe, or the universe very generally. If he had said "the universe" it would mean this universe.
