Does "monitor" has the same meaning as "examine"?
If you monitor something, you regularly check its development or progress. The word can also be used to describe a person who has the job of watching or noticing particular things. In this case, it means that there need to be guards regularly checking the prisoners' work in the kitchen. The meaning is not the same as "examine" which means to investigate something, though they are similar words. Ex: There is always a teacher in the room to monitor us during exams. Ex: I was a hall monitor during high school.
