Someone who is "laid off" or a "laid off" worker is someone who has lost or left their job because their employer has closed, moved, there was insufficient work for them to do, or their position or shift was abolished. "Laid off" is especially used when an employer lets go of employees because they can no longer afford to pay them, their business is down, or other economic reasons—not necessarily because employees weren’t good at their jobs. Ex: They did not sell a single car for a month and had to lay off workers. Ex: After the store downsized they had to lay off some sales staff. Ex: My company is making huge layoffs because of budget cuts. Ex: I have to be careful with my money for the next few months. I just got laid off.
