What's the main difference between "authority" and "power"?
Power means an organization or individual’s ability to control or direct others. It is almost like a character that is a result of having charisma and status. It is an acquired ability that comes from knowledge and expertise. Ex: He has always been a powerful person because he is so wealthy. Authority is the influence that is based on the idea of having some sort of formal or maybe legal right given to either the organization or individual. Ex: The President has no authority outside of the United States. Basically, power is necessary in order to have authority, but it is possible to have power without authority. So in this clip they are saying that the idea of schools have been given authority by society to influence us and so we trust it.
